Lorenzo Rose

Lorenzo Rose first joined DGW Law as a law co-op student in the summer of 2017. He returned for an additional work term as a law student before commencing articles with DGW Law in September 2020. In September 2021, Lorenzo joined DGW as a full-time associate.

Lorenzo was born and raised in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island in the ancestral and unceded hahuułi of the c̓išaaʔatḥ hawilth. Lorenzo moved to Victoria in 2013 to study history at the University of Victoria, where he graduated from the honours program with distinction, before deciding to pursue a law degree also at UVic.

As a law student, Lorenzo developed a keen interest in constitutional law, and particularly how the Constitution could be used to improve lives and livelihoods for impoverished and racialized communities. His major research project examined the intersection of Aboriginal and immigration law, and suggested a practical method to allow Aboriginal groups whose traditional territory spanned the 49^th parallel to exercise Aboriginal rights across the colonial border. In his last semester of law school, Lorenzo joined UVic’s Law Centre clinical program, where he had the opportunity to provide legal assistance to Victoria’s underrepresented working-class community.

Outside the office, Lorenzo enjoys watching and competing in athletics. He takes every opportunity to embarrass himself on the softball diamond, ball hockey court, and rugby pitch.

Lorenzo is called to the Bar in both British Columbia and the Northwest Territories and has represented Indigenous clients across Western and Northern Canada, from Vancouver Island to Great Slave Lake.

Representative Experience

Litigation

• Litigation support for Indigenous clients in Aboriginal title, Treaty and rights litigation;
• Advising on and conducting litigation before administrative tribunal on behalf of Indigenous clients, including in human rights and labour matters.
• Advising on and conducting various litigation matters before the B.C. Supreme Court, including contractual disputes, tort claims, and debt collection matters.

Negotiation

• Legal support for negotiating accommodations in the consultation process, including impact benefit agreements;
• Representing Indigenous governments in negotiations with government to develop new legislation and regulations regarding environmental protection, natural resource industries, and protection of Aboriginal rights;
• Legal support for mediation and settlement of disputes between Indigenous governments and their members;

Economic Development

• Legal support for corporate restructurings of Indigenous-owned business organizations;
• Drafting, negotiating, and advising on marketing agreements, partnerships, and other joint ventures between Indigenous-owned business organizations and industry proponents;
• Advising Indigenous-owned business organizations regarding labour and human rights issues;
• General legal support for corporate governance;
